Though students' summer plans are always varied and unusual, many students have to take the current economic situation into consideration when deciding on their summer plans for 2009.

For many students, the option to stay in Fayetteville and work, attend class or do both is the most appealing option for this summer.

The listing of classes available for the summer 2009 term is already available to students on ISIS, as many students plan to opt to stay in Fayetteville to either catch up or get ahead on their degree programs over the summer holiday.

Sophomore Tiffany Case will join a large group of other students as a summer orientation leader through the First Year Experience program here at the university.

These leaders will help facilitate students through their introduction to the UA, as the students tour the campus, meet other students and pick their classes for the fall.

Other students who want to participate in on-campus employment opportunities will serve as conference assistants for the university, helping the UA host the large number of conferences and programs that visit campus every summer. These students reside on campus for the summer and work as needed to support visitors to campus.

Another opportunity that many students will take advantage of on campus are the numerous research opportunities provided through the university and through professors in the different departments.

Students in programs such as biology, chemistry and engineering will have the chance to take part in unique research opportunities across the state of Arkansas.

For those students who want to get outside of Arkansas for a while, a large number of faculty-led and unique study abroad opportunities will be available. Students will travel to locations like Sweden, where they will study health care and biology, and South Africa, where they will study political, social and natural history. These programs all vary in length, location and size of participants.

Many other students will seek internship opportunities across the country, from Los Angeles to Washington D.C. Though most students seek internships that will directly relate to their major, many other students are just looking for whatever opportunity they can find.

"Ideally, I would like to have an internship in publishing," journalism major Cate Huff said, "but really, I will just take what I can get with the way the economy is going right now."

Many other students will simply travel back home to see friends, work and catch up after a year away at school.

"No matter where I end up this summer, I just need to be making money," freshman Jill Inman said.

Inman does not know yet whether she will stay in Fayetteville for the summer or head back to spend the summer in her hometown of Tulsa, she said.
