The nearly 40 honor societies on campus highlight the many accomplishments of UA students as well as provide those students with opportunities to achieve more.
There are more than 350 registered student organizations on the UA campus, and these groups "provide students the opportunity to form and develop organizations based on a common interest," according to the introduction to RSOs on the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement Web site.
"Students are able to create, govern, budget and plan their own organization and events," according to the Web site.
However, not all RSOs are associated with either special interests around campus or student government organizations.
There are almost 40 honor societies at the university, with varying requirements for membership for each. Almost all depend on a certain minimal GPA as a prerequisite.
While the Golden Key National Honor Society requires that members be in the top 15 percent of their class, the group does not require a specific major of its members.
"That is what makes this organization very special since you are able to meet people from a wide variety of majors who are honor students in their respective fields," said Ibelisse Lafuente, the Golden Key National Honor Society's secretary.
Other organizations such as Tau Beta Pi are only for engineering majors and require that their members be either in the top eighth of their junior class or the top fifth of their senior class, said Chris Nelson, Tau Beta Pi president.
Tau Beta Pi isn't the only honor society designed specifically for certain majors. Alpha Phi Sigma requires that students maintain a 3.2 GPA, be criminal justice majors and be in the top one-third of their major.
A few honor societies require that students only be in a particular class to join.
Eta Sigma Phi is a national honor society for classical studies, and to join, students must have an A or B in a Latin or Ancient Greek class.

Honor societies are a great facet of community involvement at the UA. I had the opportunity to perform an analysis of RSO appropriations two years ago and found honor society funding to be significantly lower than other groups. (Continued…)
