"Our organization offers students the opportunity to have fun and fellowship with others who study the same things," said Daniel Levine, a member of Eta Sigma Phi.
Some honors societies offer incentives for their members.
"Golden Key offers a wide variety of benefits such as scholarships, awards, internships, networking opportunities through Golden Key's partnerships with major corporations, and leadership positions," Lafuente said. Honorary member of Golden Key include Bill Cosby and former U.S. Presidents Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan.
"Members of Alpha Phi Sigma benefit by being able to distinguish themselves as being among the elite students across the nation. Members are held to high standards within the organization," said Zac T. Brown, Alpha Phi Sigma president.
Alpha Phi Sigma also helps improve a student's leadership skills and meet people with common interests, he said.
Most honor societies send invitations either in the fall or at the beginning of each semester, but if students think they meet the requirements and haven't received an invitation, they may contact the adviser or president of the group, both Lafuente and Brown said.
