UA tuition middle of the pack in the SEC

Tuition and fee costs at the UA fall around the middle of the list when compared to other state schools.
Out of 11 public universities in the Southeastern Conference, the UA is the fifth most expensive school on the list.
As of fall 2008, current tuition at the UA is $6,399. ?While the UA is in the middle of the SEC when it comes to tuition, some students still feel it is too high.
"It's pretty high," said Takao Kondo, a graduate student in athletic training. Kondo said he pays his own tuition with the help of student loans.
The University of South Carolina is the most expensive school on the list at $8,838 a year for in-state students. ?Second is the University of Kentucky, third is Auburn and fourth is the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa, whose tuition exceeds the UA's by one dollar a year. Following the UA, are the University of Tennessee at Knoxville and the University of Georgia at Athens. ?
Next on the list, Mississippi State University at Starkville, University of Mississippi at Oxford, and Louisiana State University all have tuitions around the $5,000 range. The University of Florida is the least expensive in the SEC with an in-state tuition of $3,790.
Although UA in-state students pay almost $3,000 more per year than University of Florida students, University of Florida has the third highest out-of state tuition costs at $20,640. ?The UA has the fourth cheapest out-of-state tuition out of these universities with $15,279.
"I don't pay it so it doesn't really bother me," said Vera Forrest, a senior political science major. "My parents have to pay it. I think it's pretty high and it needs to go down."
The cheapest out-of-state tuition is $12,468 at the University of Mississippi. The most expensive is the University of South Carolina, with an out-of state tuition of $22,908.
UA has the second highest tuition costs in Arkansas, after the University of Central Arkansas at Conway. UCA's tuition is about $100 more than the UA per year. Tuition and fees at UCA are currently $6,505. Arkansas State University at Jonesboro follows the UA closely with a tuition cost of $6,370.
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, the University of Arkansas at Monticello and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith are last on the list, all ranging in costs around $4,500 a year.
The highest out-of-state tuition in Arkansas is at the UA. Out-of-state students at the UA pay $15,279 a year.?

For public institutions, ranking of tuition is not meaningful without an indication of the amount of state appropriations provided in support of educating students. (Continued…)

I feel I must disagree with Ms. Lowder. Of course, it is important to understand how much of an investment in education a state is making through public university. (Continued…)
