'Essential staff' rise to occasion after ice storm
The Traveler Editorial Board
Issue date: 2/16/09 Section: Opinion
Though the damage and destruction left on campus from last month's ice storm is certainly overwhelming, it was nice to have about a weeklong break from school, work and other activities students exert additional effort to complete.
However, some on campus didn't have that luxury.
In fact, numerous staff members had to take on the wintery ice blizzard and make their way into work. These workers are the "essential staff" the UA administration calls upon during inclement weather, and they include those from University Housing, Chartwells, Facilities Management, the UA Police Department and the Arkansas Union.
Because these staff members were called into work, students were able to eat, use university electricity for tasks such as charging cell phones and using the Internet, and stay safely on campus and off the icy streets.
While the ice storm's damage still is being cleared, the Traveler would like to thank the UA staff and faculty members who, despite dangerous weather conditions, helped keep campus running and students safe during the storm's aftermath.
