"Ice Storm 2009" left behind a trail of destruction through much of Northwest Arkansas, stranded students for several days and closed the UA campus for an unprecedented four consecutive days.

One bright spot through this disaster, however, is the spirit of community that has linked people together in the common desire to rebuild the UA campus to its former beauty.

Almost 700 volunteers signed up for Campus Restoration Day, which was hosted Thursday with the goal of cleaning up limbs and other debris left by the storm.

Hundreds more who did not sign up also contributed, said Carter Ford, president of the Associated Student Government.

Students, staff members, athletes and Chancellor G. David Gearhart pitched in to revive the campus. This outpouring of help shows loyalty to this institution and the desire to maintain an upstanding campus that reflects on the students and staff within it.

However, some trees might have to be taken down entirely because of the extensive damage. To balance out this loss, the university is taking donations that will go toward the planting of new trees on campus. A link on "Daily Headlines" will direct anyone interested to the Ice Storm Web site and the offer to buy a tree.

So, because many UA members like to tout how "green" their lifestyle is, we encourage students and staff alike to help rebuild the campus, particularly the arboretum, with the donation of time or money to replace some of the trees that are a staple of our campus.
