UATV's "Razorback Reels" is now taking votes for its second Silver Reel Awards.
The awards began last year when "Razorback Reels" co-hosts, Adam Roberts and Aaron Empsall, wanted a local opinion of the movies from the year prior.
"I love movies and the Oscars, but with the Oscars there are always movies that win that most people have not seen," Roberts said. "My co-host and I wanted an award show that reflected the taste of college students, and with the Reel Awards it gets people engaged with the movies from the previous year."
The second Silver Reel Awards will be a little different than the last year.
"It is sill close to the Oscars, but this year our categories are a bit more broad, such as drama, comedy, musical, etc. This helps movies such as 'Step Brothers' have a chance," Roberts said.
Some of the Silver Reel Award nominees include "The Dark Knight," "Pineapple Express" and "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button." The co-hosts have their own personal picks on which films they believe should win.
"My pick for Best Picture is 'Slumdog Millionaire,'" Empsall said. "It is uplifting. It is thoroughly engaging from start to finish, and I believe it has something to keep everyone entertained, which is the main reason people go to the movies anyway."
At the bottom of each category, there is a "Write-In Vote" box for students to write and vote for the films, actors or actresses that were not nominated by "Razorback Reels."
"Students should vote on their favorite movies of the year so Adam and I aren't forced to make a cheesy rap video, changing the lyrics to a T.I. song in order to increase the overall student voting," Empsall said.
The details for the show are still being planned.
"We are still in the early planning stage, but we know we will show brief clips of all the nominees in each category and a longer clip of the winner after it is announced," Roberts said. "[The show] should only be about half an hour long."
Both hosts agree that this year's show will be a lot of fun to watch.
"Everyone always wants to know if a certain movie is good or not, and Adam and I are pretty blunt and straightforward in our answers to the question to let students know what is worth their time or not," Empsall said. "Plus, you never know when we are going to break out some Bollywood dancing. You can't afford to miss watching Adam's fluid arm movements."
To vote, go to RazorbackReels.com. The voting has already started and will conclude at 11 a.m. Feb. 19. The winners will be announced when the awards ceremony airs 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23.
