"New York brings a high level of competition," assistant coach Bryan Compton said. "UCLA will be there, LSU will be there, Florida should be there. So a lot of our conference foes are going to be there that we'll be battling in the pole vault with. So we feel that it's a good chance to go up against them not in our home environment.
"We're not going to have conference [championships] here so we'd like to meet them on a neutral site somewhere and see how we do against them."
The pole vaulters had last weekend off as the distance runners headed to Washington while the sprinters and rest of the jumpers traveled to Penn State.
"We took the week off while everybody else went out to Washington and Penn State," Compton said. "We kind of stayed here and tried to get some things done."
The upcoming meet will provide a unique challenge for the Hogs vaulters.
"It gives us a chance to jump on something that's not a raised runway like ours is," Compton said. "College Station [Texas A&M] and Kentucky won't be raised, either, so it gives an idea to see where we are in that process."
The competition they will see this weekend is something that Compton said his vaulters should relish.
"We always say, 'Hey, the more times you can beat somebody, the less times they think that they can beat you when they come against you time and time again,'" Compton said. "So we like to go up against them as much as possible."
