The Northwest Arkansas Community Foundation is a non-profit organization with more than 100 funds that help to benefit various sectors of the Northwest Arkansas community.
The main goal of the foundation "is to enhance the impact of the social sector by facilitating research and discussion on key issues in our community; and to help spread best practices and work collaboratively to find solutions," according to the foundation Web site.
The most important concept to understand about a community foundation is that "you don't give to a community foundation, you give through one," so the organization itself is not really a charity.
The Northwest Arkansas Community Foundation focuses on assisting interested donors in their giving and locating places in the community that are in need.
The foundation also offers endowment services to local nonprofits.
Perhaps their most notable donation was the $100,000 donation they gave to make the new satellite campus of the University of Arkansas Medical School in Fayetteville possible.
According to the Council on Foundations, the community foundations are tax-exempt public charities that serve hundreds to thousands of people who want to work in a given area.
In a community foundation, individuals, families, businesses and organizations all create permanent charitable funds that help their region specifically. The foundation itself then invests and administers these funds.
All community foundations are overseen by a volunteer board and run by professionals with expertise in identifying their community's needs. The Northwest Arkansas Community Fund is run by a number of involved citizens.
