"Experience is the No. 1 benefit of an internship," said Barbara Batson, director of the UA Career Center.

The job market has changed, and the students with more experience are more likely to get the jobs, Batson said.

Another benefit of taking an internship is that it frequently turns into a job after college. Also, most of the internships available are paid internships, she said.

Many different types of internships are available for college students. Right now there are several internships available with the federal government in homeland security. These are good internships for any major, Batson said.

There are several ways to search for available internships.

Students looking for an internship should make an appointment at the career center. The career center has numerous connections to the employment world and can provide a lot of information, Batson said.

Attending career fairs is another good way to find an internship, she said.

Information is also available at the career center Web site, including a listing of internships under eRecruiting.

Students should also talk to the faculty in the department of their major. If a student is interested in a particularly specific field, the people in their department will likely be a great source of help. The Walton College of Business has its own career center for business majors, Batson said.

The journalism department sends out internship opportunities regularly by e-mail. The latest opportunity is in New York City working for Seventeen magazine. There has also been a recent request for interns to work at a television news station in St. Louis.

Internships are not required for landscape architecture majors, but if a student was interested, the department has a network of people who can help them, said Mark Boyer, departmental chairman for the landscape architecture department.

"We post internship opportunities that are sent to us by firms. [The process] is not very formalized," Boyer said.
