All the trees in the University Arboretum were slightly to severely damaged in the ice storm that swept through Northwest Arkansas last week, observers said.

It's simple "college" math.

UA Students + tree debris + Thursday = Campus Restoration Day.

A campus cleanup for the tree debris left in the wake of the ice-storm has been organized into Campus Restoration Day at the UA.

The student-initiated day has been scheduled for Thursday from noon to 4 p.m., said Carter Ford, president of the Associated Student Government.

All students and faculty are invited to join in the clearing out of tree limbs, sticks and twigs around campus. This walk-through of campus will alleviate a large portion of the small rubble for the ground crew.

Students will be in charge of picking up small- to medium-sized branches, Ford said.

Facilities Management will place markers around campus for the debris piles. If there is no marker in the area, volunteers are asked to move debris to the nearest street curb, but out of the way of sidewalks or pedestrian traffic. Student supervisors will be located across campus to control each zone and guide volunteers to debris piles.

The individual piles will then be collected into a massive pile at the south of campus by Lot 56 and the soccer field.

The project is headed by the ASG and the Volunteer Action Center in partnership with UA Facilities Management.

Also sponsoring the event is the Interfraternity, Panhellenic, and National Pan-hellenic Councils, Residents' Interhall Congress, the Athletic Department, and the Army and Air Force ROTC, Ford said.

Students are asked to volunteer with the organization in which they participate. Students not volunteering within an organization but wishing to help may e-mail vac@uark.edu with the names and e-mails of those interested to contribute.

However, no one will be turned away from the Union Mall for the Restoration Day, Ford said.

Volunteers will be required to sign a waiver before the cleanup begins.

The cleanup effort was deliberated among Chancellor G. David Gearhart and Mike Johnson, associate vice chancellor for facilities, who initially declined the ASG offer because of safety issues.
