The UA and the Energy Systems Group launched the Razors EDGE energy savings program last Thursday with a presentation for university administrators and building executives.

Speakers for the initial presentation included Chancellor G. David Gearhart, ESG president Jim Adams and Mike Johnson, associate vice chancellor for facilities.

The presentation was open to members of the campus community who are concerned with sustainability issues and the media, according to a press release.

"Razor's EDGE is the name we've given to the energy savings program that's going into the making of energy-saving improvements to 56 buildings on the Fayetteville campus," said Steve Voorhies, manager of UA Media Relations.

The 'EDGE' in the program's name is an acronym for 'Efficiently Delivering Green Energy,' said Meram El Ramahi, manager of marketing communications for ESG.

In December, the university awarded a $22.9 million contract to ESG to make energy-saving improvements on campus, according to the press release.

ESG is an energy services company that has a "performance contract" with the UA, Ramahi said.

The company assists building owners in modernizing buildings and reducing their carbon footprint, she said.

The Razors EDGE program is a campuswide campaign designed to reduce annual energy consumption by 36 percent, with a guarantee that energy savings over a 13-year period will cover the cost of building improvements, Ramahi said.

The improvements will focus on more efficient lighting, better heating and cooling, water conservation and, specifically, solar-powered heating for the HPER pool, Ramahi said.

The UA is also helping the environment through several different programs, including a recycling competition on campus.

UA students have a chance to win cash prizes for their residence hall, fraternity or sorority by taking part in the 2009 RecycleMania competition, which started Sunday. At the same time, they'll be competing with students from about 200 colleges and universities to see which school can recycle the most and create the least waste, according to a press release.
