Students will serve in the King district of Atlanta and multiple other communities in need in the other cities.

"We want students to ask, 'What is the next level of change?'" said Oxford. "In the King district, people have poverty living at their doorstep. I want this trip to be an opportunity for students to have conversations and find out where and how they want to serve."

According to their Web site, Alternative Spring Break "encourages teams of college students to engage in service with communities dealing with social issues such as hungry and poverty."

Alternative Spring Break has been an option for students across the nation since the early nineties, but did not begin at the UA until 1996.

"These trips provide a chance for students to do something over Spring Break and give back," said Oxford.

Students wishing to attend one of these trips can apply online at the Web site for the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement. All trips cost between $50 and $150. The deadline to apply is Jan. 28.
