Health, balance and the joy of dance will be the main focuses for "Resolve to Dance," a workshop hosted by Dance Coalition.
Famed master teacher and choreographer Desiree "Dez" Robbins of the Tremaine Dance Conventions will be conducting the workshop. Robbins travels internationally to more than 35 cities each year for dance. Her expertise is in fine-tuning dancers' technique, style and movement to create a refined, professional product. Robbins' choreography has been featured in films, on "Saturday Night Live" and on ESPN2. Robbins also has coached and choreographed for the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders and the King's Royal Court Dancers, according to a press release.
"We do our best to bring in master teachers that can provide world-class dance education experiences for local dancers," said Sally Ashcraft, executive director of Dance Coalition.
Dance Coalition is a non-profit group of local artists that have been creating and presenting choreography in the Northwest Arkansas community since 1996.
"Dance Coalition holds workshops two or three times per year, typically in the fall and winter at the UA," Ashcraft said. "The dance styles and teachers vary from workshop to workshop."
In addition to Robbins, "Resolve to Dance" also will include classes by local teachers from Rhythm and Shoes of Tontitown and the Elite Dance Studios of Fayetteville.
The workshop will begin with a free yoga class. Other free programs include a dance teacher's forum and a presentation on preventing injury while dancing by Gretchen Oliver, a UA physical therapist. Other dance classes are $15 each.
"We try to keep costs reasonably low so everyone can participate," Ashcraft said.
Dancers may register in advance by visiting www.dancecoalition.com and completing a registration form.
"We recommend that participants have some dance experience to take most of the dance classes, but anyone who wants to is certainly welcome to come try it out or observe," Ashcraft said. "No experience is needed for the yoga class or the lunch hour presentation with Dr. Gretchen Oliver."
"Resolve to Dance" will begin 10 a.m. tomorrow in Room 220 of the HPER building. For more information about the classes, contact Dance Coalition at 479-422-6132 or e-mail the group at info@dancecoalition.com.
