"Knight: Noble Warrior of England 1200 - 1600" by Christopher Gravett (Osprey Publishing Company, $25.95)

Perhaps society has embellished the history of the knight a little. Perhaps the shining armor wasn't exactly shining all the time. In "Knight: Noble Warrior of England 1200-1600," author and curator Christopher Gravett explores the true history of the knight.

Lavishly illustrated in color and in black and white, this book is a must for all historical fans of the horse-charging, lavishly dressed warrior. This is a particularly interesting text, as it travels over the course of the knight's lengthy history. Being a knight was not easy, as it required savvy worthy of any outstanding politician. In addition, their role in society radically changed depending on the situation and monarch in power.

Within the contents of this 288-page book, Gravett includes details about the knight's clothing, weapons, wars and peacetime functions. Also included is a detailed explanation of their chivalry code, which has made this warrior truly famous.

This book is not to be missed by the historian or those with an interest in history just a little outside the norm.
