The commission has the authority to examine all aspects of the university's finances. The group will review and reduce spending practices and eliminate duplicate services offered at the university, and it will meet for the first time "very soon."
Even the most efficient organization can creatively find ways to try to contain costs, Kendig said. The struggle is containing costs without compromising the quality of educational services that the university offers.
It is a daily charge, he said.
A tuition increase is imminent, but there is no increase in the student fees overall.
Carter Ford, ASG president, has been working with Gearhart and Pederson to keep the student fee the same amount for the next academic year.
Carter, the chair for the Student Fee Review Board, said the board was determined to not raise fees for the following year because of the economy. The board was ready to evaluate which fee area to decrease if there was a proposal for an increase of funds.
"There were no fee increase proposals for the upcoming year, which is great news for the students," Ford said.
"Our institution is not suffering as much as other institutions around the country," Ford said. "Arkansas's economy is holding. I am very, very excited that we are able to accommodate this economy."
The current undergraduate required student fee is $32 per credit hour. Other mandatory fees also are paid by students, according to their enrollment in various colleges at the UA.
Ford commended the UA staff for their dedication and hard work in keeping the tuition costs as low as possible.
Chancellor Gearhart is very committed to his work for the interest of the students, Ford said.
Kendig expects the university to take a deeper look at the tuition costs soon.
"In light of the fiscal outlook ahead, I expect us to more aggressively pursue [the goals of the commission] in the coming months," he said.
