Like Ouyang's quest to escape loss, other characters also struggle with their own defeats. His good friend Huang Yaoshi (Tony Leung Ka-fai) drinks a special wine that makes him an amnesiac, and a nameless swordsman (Tony Leung Chiu-wai) is going blind, both of whom are suffering from unrequited love.
The rest of the characters are compromised of Maggie Cheung, Jacky Cheung, Carina Lau and Charlie Young are also important, as they reveal the hindrance the men suffer from.
My friend and I went to see the film on the grand screen, and we enjoyed it all. From my own recollections, some scenes were cut, some scenes were added and more music compositions were included. Particular scenes that I did not recognize were the extended battle scene between the blind swordsman and the bandits, the blood and more scenes featuring the luminous Maggie Cheung as the anonymous woman who broke Ouyang's heart.
My own memory is not so good, and I cannot determine exactly what was different from my DVD version, but the story is still the same story I've known, and loved and the film is absolutely worth another trip to the cinema.
