As students are ready to enjoy the coming winter break, the University of Arkansas is also taking winter break.
The east side of the Arkansas Union, where the computer laboratory, the RZ's and Club Red are located, will remain open until 5 p.m., Dec. 23. University administrative officials said the union will be open for staff and faculty who will have meetings there. The RZ's Coffee House and the Union Market Food Court will close after Dec.19.
Academic halls will remain open during the break, which are Duncan Avenue Apartments, Gregson, Holcombe, Northwest Quad and Yocum halls. Other halls will close at 5 p.m., Dec. 17 until Jan. 8. as well as Brough Commons, the Northwest Quad, and Pomfret Honors Quarters.
The Razorback Transit Bus will operate on the regular schedule, which is from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Dec. 18, 19, 22, 23 and Jan. 5-9. No service in between.
While the university buildings are closed, students who stay in Fayetteville during winter break find their own ways to spend their break.
Sherrie L. Choong, junior finance major from Malaysia, also stayed in Fayetteville during winter break. "I stayed here because I didn't have any relatives here in the United States and it's very expensive to return home to Malaysia for the break," she said.
"Campus was very quiet… It felt like there was not a single soul on campus," she said. "It felt a little unsafe to me since there were [fewer] people around me and my friends were away."
Choong stayed in Yocum Hall with a few other international students. "Since it was so quiet, I was afraid to stay in the dorm alone 24/7. So, I spent most of my time going to my other international friends' houses near campus instead," she said.
Hanfei Wang, a sophomore marketing major from China who also stayed last winter break, said she decided to take a break since she did not have any plan for traveling. "I mostly watched movies, read and [slept]. Nothing much [more] than that," she said.
Choong said her friends and she went out of Fayetteville together and visited places together such as the Jones Center for families, Springdale, Rogers, Mt. Sequoyah. She will stay in Yocum Hall for the winter break again this year.
