A three-member ensemble comprised of world-class UA professors will perform 8 p.m. tonight in the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall. The Fulbright Trio's concert will feature several different musical genres, allowing it to be enjoyed by people with a variety of musical tastes.

Now in its eighth year, the group typically performs toward the end of the semester to showcase their impressive repertoire.

The trio is loaded with talent, with Stephen Gates performing on cello, Er-Gene Kahng on violin and Jura Margulis on piano. They will perform three pieces: "Trio in C major" from KV 548 by Wolfgang Mozart; "Trio in A minor" from Op. 50 by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky; and Paul Schoenfield's "Café Music."

"The three pieces on the program are very different," said Margulis, describing "Trio in C major" as a very enthusiastic piece full of joy and verve. "[It] is also a virtuoso piece for all three instruments, challenging the players with passages and cadences like a full instrumental concert."

The second piece on the program, "Trio in A Minor" was written by Tchaikovsky in honor of his good friend and fellow musical legend, Nikolai Rubinstein, Margulis said. It is one of the most challenging pieces in piano trio repertoire, he said.

"On the journey through the piece, one encounters the most sweeping and lyrical as well as heroic and triumphant melodies," Margulis said. "It is truly Russian music."

"Café Music" was written to be performed at a restaurant, but also to be potentially played in a concert hall. Schoenfield wrote the song after filling in for a friend on piano at an upscale restaurant with live music. The piece spans several styles, from Broadway to Gypsy to light classical, according to a statement by Schoenfield.

With a program spanning several genres and themes, this performance is sure to be great with three world-class musicians at the reins.

A reception will begin after the concert. Admission is free for all to enjoy.
