LITTLE ROCK - The LSU Tigers had two hands on the Golden Boot, but the Arkansas Razorbacks weren't ready to part ways with the rivalry trophy.
Senior quarterback Casey Dick, playing in his final game as a Razorback, found wide receiver London Crawford in the end zone for a 24-yard touchdown with 21 seconds remaining to give Arkansas a 31-30 win over LSU on Friday and possession of the Golden Boot for the second consecutive season.
"I remember the Miracle on Markham in 2002," Arkansas center Jonathan Luigs said. "I think I was a junior or senior in high school and I was at that game. This game was very similar to that one. It was two players making a play in the corner of the end zone and it was just an amazing finish."
Many of the 55,325 fans in attendance Friday at War Memorial Stadium likely had similar thoughts, thinking back to Nov. 29, 2002, and Matt Jones' 31-yard touchdown pass to DeCori Birmingham that gave Arkansas a Southeastern Conference Western Division championship.
Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino wasn't there for that game, but was equally proud of his players for the furious comeback, rallying from 16 points down to take down the Tigers.
"I can't tell you how proud I am of this team," Petrino said. "First and foremost, the seniors, they've hung in there. They didn't go out quite like they thought they would, but they kept practicing. They kept working hard."
Arkansas (5-7, 2-6 SEC) started out fast, taking the ball and traversing 76 yards in six plays, capping things off with a 17-yard Dennis Johnson touchdown run.
The true freshman had 127 yards on only 18 carries, including a career-long 54-yard run that set up Arkansas' second touchdown, a 1-yard pass from Nathan Dick to Andrew Davie.
"Offensively, we were able to mix in the run," Petrino said. "We got some 3-, 4- and 5-yard runs and were able to get some hard-earned yards with Dennis Johnson and his ability to make those hard yards."
The second quarter belonged to LSU, and the Tigers looked the part of defending national champions.
