Fix the UA tobacco policy

E-mail ASG senators to create designated smoking areas

Designated smoking areas would make things simpler for all involved.

This is not a perfect policy. But it is clearly better than the policy we have now.

It's better for nonsmokers. It's better for smokers. And its especially better for anyone sick of seeing cigarette butts on the ground.

So, here's where the e-mailing comes in.

Sometime between now and Nov. 18, I need you to either visit www.FixTobacco.com or join the Facebook group called "Fix the UA Tobacco Policy." There you will find a condensed list of all the public e-mails of your elected representatives in the ASG senate. Copy and paste the addresses into your e-mail, and send them a message.

Tell them that you are a student at the UA, tell them why you support the Resolution to Fix the UA Tobacco Policy and politely request that they support it, as well.

Don't think for one minute that the ASG senate will pass this resolution without your e-mails. My informal polling shows that a large number of senators are on the fence about this issue. Constituent pressure - or lack thereof - will tip the balance when it comes up for a vote.

If my math is correct, if the resolution is passed and all 18 ASG members of Campus Council follow through, then we'll only need 10 nonstudent members of the ASG to vote in favor of the fix to get a majority. The Campus Council has the authority to change this policy.

This is our chance. Please, visit www.FixTobacco.com and send that e-mail.

I think that we should have a smoking area for employees and students. There are way too many people that smoke and are on campus every day! Thank you for the opportunity to voice my opinion!
