Student leaders and those interested in leading are invited to learn about the transition of leadership in an organization through a presentation by Chancellor G. David Gearhart Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 3 to 4 p.m. in Arkansas Union Room 503.

The Presentation, entitled "Passing over the Reins: Developing the Next President," will detail the Chancellor's personal experience and advice regarding when is a good time to start transitioning the next president of an organization.

"It is never too early to start developing the next president," Gearhart said.

The transition process can be quite tedious in a small to medium student organization; however, the transition process for a chancellor at a large university is no easy task.

Students are invited to "find out the process of transitioning the new chancellor and learn the tricks of the trade," which they can then apply to their own organizations.

At the workshop, students will learn best practices for officer transition, types of developmental experiences one can address with the future organization president and how to impose the mentoring aspect in the transition.

Students can then take back the methods that helped Gearhart prepare for his role as this university's chancellor, and apply them to their organizations across campus.

"We approached the chancellor to do this workshop since he had just [gone] through such a similar experience through the process of transitioning into his role as chancellor," said Arthur Goldin, a representative from the Center for Leadership and Community Engagement.

This workshop is part of a nine-session workshop series called the Leadership Workshop Series hosted by the CLCE for members and leaders of UA student organizations to addresses various topics that students might be experiencing in their own organizations.

CLCE officials expect anywhere from 50 to 100 participants to attend, Goldin said.

Gearhart is the fifth UA chancellor, and he was appointed last year following 10 years of service to the university as vice chancellor for university advancement.
