The UA Wind Symphony and the University Symphony Orchestra will perform classical compositions 7:30 p.m. tonight at the Walton Arts Center.
The wind symphony, conducted by W. Dale Warren, will begin the concert. They will perform "Interlude and Fanfare from Symphony No. 3" by Aaron Copland, "Second Suite in F Major" by Gustav Holst, "Concerto Gaucho" by Kevin Walczyk, "Rocky Point Holiday" by Ron Nelson, and "Dance I from Jazz Suite No. 2" by Dmitri Shostakovich, according to the press release.
The piece by Copland should be familiar and please the audience. It is also known as the popular "Fanfare for the Common Man," said Amy Mayes, a clarinetist in the wind symphony and the University Symphony Orchestra.
Holst's piece features four movements based on several English folk tunes. The audience will hear the popular tune "Greensleeves" interwoven into the final movement, she said.
"['Rocky Point Holiday'] is a mixture of flashy overtures and pretty melodies," said Mayes, also pointing out that it would be one of the group's more difficult pieces for the program.
Richard Rulli, a UA trumpet professor, will also be guest performing with the wind symphony on "Concerto Gaucho."
Rulli received his doctoral degree in music from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, according to the UA Music Department's Web site.
Following the wind symphony's performance, the University Symphony Orchestra will take the stage for their second concert of the season.
The orchestra, conducted by Robert Mueller, will perform the third movement from Carl Maria von Weber's "Concerto No. 1 in F Minor Op. 73" movement three from "Allegretto," movement three of "Lento assai" from Ludwig van Beethoven's "String Quartet No. 16 in F Major, Op. 135" and Giuseppe Verdi's "Overture from La Forza del Destino."
The group's opening piece will feature Sandy Nieves, a senior music performance major, as solo clarinetist.
Both of the groups are once again set to deliver world-class performances for all Northwest Arkansas residents to enjoy.
"The groups have worked hard for this performance ... just like the other performances we have had," Mayes said. "It challenges us, but we always look forward to being able to give a great performance and have fun."
Admission for the general public is $10, $5 for senior citizens and $1 for UA students. For more information about tonight's event or for more information about the groups, call the music department at (479) 575-4701 or visit www.uark.edu/depts/uamusic.
