The players weren't the same, but the score nearly was.
A year after defeated Campbellsville by 40 points, Arkansas handed the Tigers a 103-58 loss in the exhibition opener for the Razorbacks Monday night at Bud Walton Arena.
Juniors Michael Washington and Stefan Welsh combined for 42 points to lead the young Razorbacks, who had five freshmen see playing time.
Arkansas coach John Pelphrey said he was pleased with the way Washington and Welsh led the team.
"[Washington and Welsh] both performed well," Pelphrey said. "That needs to continue. They're not always going to shoot the ball that well and probably won't always score as many points or grab as many rebounds as they did tonight, but they need to come with a great attitude."
After falling behind 7-5 in the first three minutes, a 3-pointer by Washington ignited a 25-5 run for the Razorbacks, who took a 52-27 lead into halftime.
Arkansas came out strong in the second half, using sharp perimeter shooting and tight defense to continue to pull away from the Tigers.
The Hogs finished with five players scoring in double figures.
Washington led the way with 22 points, seven rebounds and four blocks, while Welsh had 20 points, connecting on 4-of-6 three-point attempts.
Freshman guard Rotnei Clarke also hit 4-of-6 shots from 3-point range, finishing the game with 17 points.
Fellow freshmen Michael Sanchez and Jason Henry were also in double digits. Sanchez finished with 13 points and five rebounds and Henry added 10 points and grabbed six rebounds.
After playing behind former Razorbacks Steven Hill, Darian Townes, Charles Thomas and Vincent Hunter for two seasons, Washington finally has a chance to show what he can do. Pelphrey said he is happy with the way Washington has played.
"He's worked like that since we lost in March," Pelphrey said. "I'm very, very proud of how he worked and with his attitude. His condition is probably the most glaring area. He's just got himself to where he can play every rep in practice, and he kind of has to now since there are no subs."
