University Programs will be presenting a unique opportunity to listen to and learn about jazz through a combination of lecture and performance by Pentomino's 6 p.m. today in the Arkansas Student Union Connections Lounge.
Pentomino is comprised of current and former UA students, according to a press release.
Members include William Hobbs on piano, C.J. Weatherford on tenor saxophone, Derek Jones on bass, Drew Packard on guitar, and Chris Wylie on drums.
Their repertoire is broad, ranging from original pieces to Claude Debussy to Charlie Parker.
Tonight's performance will also feature special guest Michael Howland on trumpet.
The group will discuss different types, periods and sub-genres of jazz, said Matthew Chavez, chair of the University Programs Cultures and Concepts Committee.
Pentomino had a similar performance last year, focusing on earlier jazz from the 1960s, according to a press release.
The group briefly discussed different aspects of jazz, including its evolution and different interpretations, and then proceeded to demonstrate different jazz styles, offering the audience a unique experience not generally seen in live performances, Chavez said.
Last year's jazz lecture and demonstration was successful enough to bring it back to the UA campus for another year.
This year, the group will focus on more recent jazz, he said.
Pentomino has been very active in the Northwest Arkansas music scene, performing regularly at Noodles Restaurant and donating their services to the Aransas Rape Crisis Center.
Each member is greatly involved with various musical groups and organizations, but the purpose of Pentomino is to "define who we are culturally," according to the group's MySpace Web site.
The event is free for all students, faculty, staff members, and guests to enjoy. The UP will also provide free food for the audience.
"I think of it as being a fun thing because you can listen to jazz, learn about jazz and grab some free food," Chavez said.
"It is just going to be a great time to stop by and learn something about jazz," he said.
