Higher Education

Obama plans to create a new American Opportunity Tax Credit, which would provide the first $4,000 of a college education free for students who completed 100 hours of community service. The Illinois senator also wants to simplify the process of applying for federal financial aid by eliminating a separate application and allowing families to apply by checking a box on their tax forms.

Health Care

Obama looks to make health insurance affordable and accessible to all. He proposes affordable, accessible health care for all Americans and to build on the existing health care system. Under Obama's plan, health care costs will be lowered by investing in health information technology, prevention and care coordination. Obama also will require coverage of preventive services, including cancer screenings, and will increase state and local preparedness for terrorist attacks and natural disasters to promote public health.

Foreign Policy

Obama's mission for Iraq is to "successfully" end the war and ask Iraqi leaders to use oil revenues to fund their reconstruction. He also plans to give incentives to Iran to end its nuclear program and its support of terrorism. Creating a ban on the creation of all nuclear weapons and taking all "loose" material from the rest of the world is a broader goal, and he intends to accomplish this within four years. He supports a continuation of strong U.S. and Israeli ties and wants to end the genocide in Darfur and fight poverty within Africa.

Economy

Obama pledges to enact a tax on excessive oil company profits, supply $50 billion to jumpstart the economy and provide a tax cut for working families, which would eliminate income taxes for 10 million Americans. When it comes to trade, Obama plans to reward companies that support American workers with a tax credit. Obama wants to ban companies' ability to permanently replace striking workers, encourage flexible work schedules and increase the minimum wage. To prevent a repeat of the current mortgage crisis, Obama promises to mandate "accurate loan disclosure." A Homeowner Obligation Made Explicit (HOME) score would spell out the full cost of loans, allowing potential borrowers to compare various mortgages. Obama also pledges to increase federal support for research, technology and innovation.

Environmental Policy

Obama's "New Energy for America" plan will provide short-term relief to American families facing pain at the pump, help create 5 million new jobs by investing $150 billion over the next 10 years to jumpstart efforts to build a clean energy future, save more oil than currently imported from the Middle East and Venezuela combined over the next 10 years, put 1 million hybrid cars on the road by 2015, ensure 10 percent of electricity comes from renewable sources by 2012, and implement an economywide cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80 percent by 2050.
