"The Whiskey Rebels" by David Liss (Random House, $26.00)
Following in the footsteps of his previous bestsellers, author David Liss takes readers on an entertaining journey through early U.S. history in "The Whiskey Rebels."
Immediately following the revolution, the U.S. is filled with opportunity for wealth, but also good and evil. Ethan Saunders was a successful spy during the Revolution, but he and his superior were wrongly convicted of treason and quietly retired. Unable to deal with this shame, Saunders has become somewhat of a miscreant. However, he is unexpectedly called upon by Alexander Hamilton, the Treasury Secretary, to uncover a plot to undermine the newly formed U.S. Bank.
Meanwhile, Joan Maycott, who is married to a war veteran, has traveled to the Pennsylvania frontier with her husband to finish her novel and begin a new life of farming. Their hopes completely fall apart when they realize they have been scammed along with many others on the frontier. When her husband is unexpectedly shot and killed, Joan vows vengeance on those who had cheated them and caused her husband's death.
"The Whiskey Rebels" is a very readable novel full of interesting tidbits about early U.S. history nicely intertwined with a splash of fiction. Expect this to become another bestseller from an already well-established author.
The book is available for purchase at the University of Arkansas Bookstore.
