Electronic-jam band Sound Tribe Sector 9 (STS9) will be jamming out at Cain's Ballroom 8:30 tonight in Tulsa, Okla.

STS9's sound is classified as a blend between electronica and jam-rock, sometimes referred to as "jamtronica." The word "crunk" has also been used to describe the band's unique sound, which fuses funk, jazz and hip-hop elements, according to the band's MySpace page.

What separates STS9 from other electronic acts is their use of traditional rock instruments to form complex beats, euphoric buildups and a trance-like energy that must be experienced to be understood. It's this energy - fueled by the dancing crowds - that has made the band a popular act for musical festivals to book in late-night slots. During the last couple of years, STS9 has performed at the Bonnaroo, Wakarusa and Rothbury music festivals.

Tyler Norton, a junior political science major, said he saw STS9 play from midnight to well past 3 a.m. at the Bonnaroo music festival in 2007. He said he didn't particularly like the electronic genre, but the STS9 show made him a fan.

"You're either a fan [of STS9], or you haven't been to a show yet," Norton said.

The band is touring from West coast to East coast to promote their latest album Peaceblaster. The tour will be topped off with a four-day run at The Tabernacle in Atlanta, ending early morning on New Year's Day.

In an interview on the STS9 Web site, bass player David Murphy said he wished to recreate the energy that is produced at an STS9 show on the album.

"[We were] trying to conjure up some more of that energy that the shows have in the way that we present the songs in the live format," said Murphy in the interview. "That was definitely a big intention of ours going into this."

Accompanying the thrilling energy and ecstatic atmosphere is the visual bliss that is STS9's light show, which is nothing short of mind-blowing.

Opening for STS9 will be the up-and-coming electronic band Pnuma Trio from Memphis. Like STS9, Pnuma Trio pulls influences from all over the musical spectrum, but the trio has been known to include the improvisational element into their live shows.

Pnuma Trio played with one-man jam band Keller Williams at George's Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville, Ark., on Aug. 30, and they made an appearance earlier this month at the Coalessence Festival in Eureka Springs, Ark.
