Three 6 Mafia invaded Fayetteville Friday night. Although several hip-hop and rap artists have come through this way in the past (mostly to frat houses for Row Week), this is the first big hip-hop event ... and it was a success.
The night started off with three opening acts in the Fayetteville Town Center, which is a decent-sized room perfect for holding mid-level concerts in Fayetteville. While the opening acts - Boom Kinetic, Thanks For Nothing and up and coming Memphis hip-hop act Free Sol - performed covers and original songs, the crowd was extremely unresponsive until Three 6 took the stage.
Even though the concert was certainly entertaining, it was a typical rap concert. And by that, I mean it was laced with nonstop profanity, drinks passed on stage, multiple girls on stage dancing exclusively with one another to please the group, and popular songs lasting no more than two minutes.
Three 6 Mafia played several songs that were both popular with the crowd and on regular rotation around the country, such as "Lolli Lolli (Pop That Body)" and "Sippin' On Some Sizzurp."
However, the group's "playful" nature with the crowd took up much of the night's entertainment and definitely would not be suitable for an all-ages crowd.
But, this is a rap concert and I have seen popular, mainstream rock bands use more profanity than Three 6 did.
While the show was exceptionally stellar, the crowd could have been better. About 1,500 people attended the show, but the venue definitely could have handled more than 2,000 attendees.
More vigorous promotion and possibly a drop in ticket prices could have engaged more people to the show, but it definitely can be called a success, even with the less-than-stellar numbers.
The concert also was running late by about an hour and the staff could have managed time a little better for the restless crowd of mostly college students.
Local opening acts were showcased during the night's event and should have been given more attention from the crowd, even though rock bands are a bit of a strange opener for a group like Three 6 Mafia.
