The Colleges Against Cancer student organization is bringing Three 6 Mafia to Fayetteville 7 p.m. tonight at the Fayetteville Town Center. The organization will give a dollar to the American Cancer Society for every ticket sold.
"Basically, I was looking for a different type of event and I just, by chance, e-mailed the promoter of the concert," CAC President Steve Sparks said. "Three 6 Mafia was already coming to Fayetteville, so I e-mailed the promoter, and his daughter is in St. Jude's right now going through chemo, so he jumped on board and basically asked me to help promote it."
Dominic Box, a freshman international business major, said he would love to attend the concert.
"It's great that Fayetteville is going to have such a well-known group to support a good cause," he said.
Also attending the concert is Riley Clark, a freshman math major, who said she can't wait to see Three 6 Mafia perform.
"I'm definitely going," Clark said. "I had no idea it was to raise awareness for cancer, though."
The CAC is a student organization whose mission is to support all types of cancer research and bring attention to the issues at hand. There are around 300 colleges involved, with a separate chapter for each college, Sparks said.
The organization as a whole initiated in 2001, but the UA chapter began last year.
"There are about 120 active members in the CAC," Sparks said, "but we keep growing. We use every program as a recruitment tool."
CAC programs include the breast cancer awareness event hosted the first week of October and the upcoming Great American Smokeout, which will take place Thursday, Nov. 20. Last year, the CAC played a major role in support of the tobacco-free campus the UA has enabled this year.
Perhaps the largest event the CAC sponsors is Relay for Life, which is hosted in April. The relay is a major fundraising tool for the American Cancer Society, and more information about the event will be released as it gets closer to its starting date.
For people interested in joining the CAC or finding out more information, Sparks said "it's easy. Just sign up, get on the e-mail list and show up to the meetings. It doesn't take a lot."
The organization meets once a month in the fall semester and every two weeks during the spring semester.
Tickets for the Three 6 Mafia concert are $38 and can be ordered at 36tickets.com or the Northwest Arkansas Mall service desk.
