Houser said he thinks students should be better educated on how to avoid theft and how to get across campus safely at night.

Also, there needs to be a police presence on the north side of campus because up to 2,400 people live in that area, he said

"It's a small town here on the north end of campus," Houser said.

The building itself was built in the 1970s, but a student interior designer recently redesigned it as a substation, Houser said. The space became available after part of Reid Hall had to be demolished to make way for Maple Hill.

The substation contains two work stations, so two officers can be at the substation at a time, Crain said. Police officers can use the substation to conduct interviews and file police reports.

The substation will have complete radio communications with the main station, Crain said. Evidence and lockers will not be kept at the substation, though.

The substation might also be used during football games as a "mini-command post," Houser said.

"This is not a traditional police station," Houser said. "It is really more of an educational outreach post."
