The 2008 homecoming theme of "Where Tradition meets Tomorrow" was announced Thursday, Oct. 2, and the new theme has brought a few changes with it.

This 2008 theme was chosen to be a celebration of how the UA came to be and the way students perceive it - including the traditions, the colors, the evolution of the Hog, the alma mater and the fight song.

The Student Alumni Board, which runs the homecoming celebration and spirit competition, also wanted students to look to the future to see what legacy the new classes of Razorbacks will leave for future generations.

"As an organization, SAB hopes to make this year's homecoming the biggest in UA history," said Amanda Wyatt, SAB homecoming chair. "We will be looking for more groups to compete, more alumni attendance at events and more community participation throughout the week."

Wyatt also noted that SAB has partnered with a variety of Fayetteville businesses in order to encourage more Razorback spirit both on and off campus.

The homecoming spirit competition is made up of 11 competitions for Greeks, and 10 for Registered Student Organizations and residence halls. The competitions this year include a cook-off, talent show, parade float, banner and lawn decoration competitions, and a membership drive for the R.E.A.L. Razorbacks program.

Last Monday, a bill was put before the Residents' Interhall Congress regarding the R.E.A.L. Razorbacks drive. The author said it was unfair to try to get on-campus residents to pay the $15 fee to receive points for homecoming.

"R.E.A.L. Razorbacks constitutes a large part of our funding," Wyatt said. "We do not ask for an entry fee for any group, and all of our events are free to the public. The $15 R.E.A.L. membership is a small way that people can show their support for homecoming programming."

Though this competition is a carryover from last year, many changes to the other competitions were announced at the homecoming meeting.
