The Fulbright College of Arts and Sciences is presenting the UA Wind Symphony 7 p.m. in the Baum Walker Hall of the Walton Arts Center. Performances will begin at 7:30.
The wind symphony is a select group of talented students that performs several times throughout the fall and spring semesters. Members are selected by auditions at the beginning of each semester, according to the UA band Web site.
The group rehearses from 12:30 to 1:20 on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, said Joe Wilhelm, a sophomore music education and performance major and the group's principal trombonist.
On tonight's program will be "Canzona" by Peter Mennin; "An Unending Legacy" by Barry Milner; "Folk Song Suite" by R. Vaughan Williams; "Army of the Nile" by Kenneth Alford; "Concerto for Horn" by Randall E. Faust; and "Nitro" by Frank Ticheli, according to a press release.
"We will be performing a lot of different styles representing several genres," Wilhelm said. "Our pieces range from British style to brass fanfares.
"An Unending Legacy" was written by Barry Milner, who currently teaches aural perception classes at the UA, said Amy Mayes, a sophomore clarinetist in the group.
The piece was written to honor a teacher who had a lasting impact on Milner.
"Folk Song Suite" and "Army of the Nile" both feature a British style, Mayes said.
The UA Wind Symphony has a history of being a very talented group, and this performance will continue to show that legacy.
"This year's group is very, very good as a whole," Mayes said. "Even though we are a much younger group than last year's wind symphony, everyone has risen to the challenges of the music," she said.
The group will perform several challenging pieces that should please the audience.
"All of our pieces encompass all of the band's abilities," Mayes said.
Admission for tonight's concert will be $10 for the general public, $5 for senior citizens and UA students can purchase tickets at the door for only $1.
"We really are one of the finest collegiate wind symphonies in the nation," Wilhelm said.
