UA journalism professors Larry Foley and Dale Carpenter are heading to St. Louis Saturday for the Mid-America Emmy Awards. The duo is nominated for Best Historical Documentary, Best Editing for a Program or a Feature and Best Photography for a Program for their documentary "Beacon of Hope."
"It's an honor to be nominated and to produce a program that was well-received," said Foley, who wrote and produced the film.
"'Beacon of Hope' is the first ever documentary about the UA. It includes its history, unique traditions and myths," said Foley, who won the Best Cultural Documentary Mid-America Emmy last year for "Charles Banks Wilson."
"You're pleased as possible to be nominated for the award, and then you are just shocked if you actually win," Foley said.
The traditions tackled in the documentary include the Senior Walk, the razorback, Old Main and the impact former Arkansas Senator J. William Fulbright had on the UA, as well as the state and the nation, Foley said.
The film also includes the subjects of integration and how Fayetteville out-bid competition to land the UA, according to a press release about the documentary.
"This honor is great because you have a sense of pride about the university. I went here as an undergraduate and have taught here for 15 years. It's my university," Foley said.
"The interesting part for me was seeing the old archival photographs and films in the university's history that attracted national attention," Carpenter said in the press release. "It was fascinating to learn the importance of the Fine Arts Building and how it was regarded as a ground breaking center for its time.
"I grew up in Arkansas, and I've been on faculty here for 13 years, yet there are stories we tell that I'd never heard about," Carpenter said in the press release.
The Mid-America Emmys is a part of several different Emmy Awards, including the Primetime Emmys, the Daytime Emmys and the Community Service Emmy, as well as awards for different parts of the nation, Foley said.
"Beacon of Hope" has already won first place at the Broadcast Educators of America Awards, and Carpenter and Foley hope to pick up three more awards this weekend.
