"The Darker Side" by Cody McFadyen (Bantam, $24.00)
After shocking the thriller world with "Shadow Man" and "The Face of Death," Cody McFadyen's protagonist, Smoky Barrett, is back for more shocks and terror in "The Darker Side." Barrett and her team are unexpectedly called from Los Angeles to Washington, D.C., to investigate a homicide. When the team discovers the victim is a member of a prominent political family and is murdered with bravado on a plane flight, Barrett knows that she's faced with an experienced killer. As Smoky and her team dig deeper, the stakes are raised with even more victims uncovered and more on the horizon.
Calling himself The Preacher, the cunning killer posts videos of his victims online where they confess and reveal their deepest darkest secrets immediately prior to their execution. In a confused and twisted religious logic, The Preacher believes that through their revelations, others will confess their hidden sins and will therefore be saved. Setting logic aside, Barrett and her team are forced to work at a frantic pace, while simultaneously juggling their personal lives, in order to stop the bloodshed and pain.
McFadyen is quickly becoming known for his twisted and dark antagonists. Although his books are very bloody, dark and violent, they are highly enjoyable. Readers are likely to find themselves continuing to turn the pages long into the night.
A word of caution: don't turn off the lights.
