Independent presidential candidate Ralph Nader wants to take back Washington from the corporations and give access to citizen groups so they can use the government to make the country better, he said Monday.
"We want our government to stand tall again," Nader said.
Nader will be speaking at a press conference 6 p.m. tomorrow in Room 213 of Kimpel Hall. A rally, themed "Open the Presidential Debates," will occur afterward in Room 102.
The American public wants more candidates at the presidential debates than the two major-party candidates, said Nader, who cited a Fox News poll from 2004 showing that 64 percent of Americans favored allowing other candidates to debate.
Currently, polls show that 6 percent of the voting public, which is about 10 million voters, intends to vote for him, he said.
"Since when do 10 million votes not matter?" Nader asked. "Why are we rationing out debates? We don't ration out entertainment or sports."
Presidential debates are controlled by the Commission on Presidential Debates, created in 1987 by the Democratic and Republican parties, and the result is that smaller parties are locked out by their competitors, Nader said.
The debates themselves are broadcast over airwaves that are public property, and limiting the candidates involved means issues ignored by those two candidates will not be debated, Nader said.
"It limits the diversity of agendas and the diversity of viewpoints that will be presented," he said.
Among those issues are adopting national health insurance, cutting the military budget, working to end corporate personhood and promoting solar power among other issues, according to the Web site votenader.org.
Solar energy will eventually replace fossil fuel, which is why the energy industry is so against it, Nader said. Arkansas residents should not allow a fourth coal-fired power plant because coal damages miners' health, leaves scars in the ground where it is mined and washes acid into streams, he said.
