What it means when USC pummels Ohio State

Swinging for the Fences

A few things after watching Southern California dominate The Ohio State University on Saturday:

1. Six more weeks of winter.

That is, we're all subject to ESPN's non-stop promotion of USC for the rest of the season, or at least until they lose a game.

And there's only one ranked team left on the Trojan schedule for the rest of the year, No. 17 Oregon, which is the only other Pac-10 team without a loss three weeks into the season.

There are eight undefeated teams in the Southeastern Conference. Just saying.

Nobody wants to watch "Is USC the greatest football team ever?" again. Yes, that was really a piece that dominated ESPN for most of 2005 until Texas knocked them off in the National Championship game.

The Trojans are a great football team. Leave it at that.

2. No respect for Oklahoma or entire SEC in 2008.

No. 1 USC got 61 of 64 first place votes in Sunday's AP Top 25.

No. 2 Oklahoma, whose quarterback passed for more touchdowns than incompletions against Washington on Saturday, didn't receive a single vote for first place. The Sooners have lost four of their last five bowl games in embarrassing fashion and won't sniff the title game unless they go undefeated. Circle October 11 on your calendar for the Red River Shootout against No. 7 Texas, the most exciting football game of the year.

The five undefeated SEC teams in the Top 10 got three votes for first place. No. 3 Georgia got two votes and No. 4 Florida got one. If USC runs the table against a mediocre schedule, the SEC teams will fall in line behind the Trojans in the polls after beating up on each other.

3. The Big Ten is the big loser.

The league's marquee teams, OSU and Michigan, are a combined 3-3 without playing any conference opponents.

The Buckeyes are 1-3 against the SEC and Pac-10 since 2006, with the one win coming against Washington.

While the Buckeyes dropped to No. 13 in the AP poll, Wisconsin climbed to No. 8, and Penn State moved up to No. 16.

What's even sadder is that Oregon - a team that was so lucky to escape lowly Purdue with a win, had its starting QB hurt on the very last overtime offensive series. (Continued…)

The derogatory comments about USC are so silly. Typical SEC whining. You mentioned the USC loss to Texas but what about the spanking the Trojans gave Oklahoma in that championship game? The spread was considerably larger than the Texas game, like 55-19. (Continued…)
