The UA women's soccer team travels to Clarkesville, Tenn., Friday to take on the Lady Governors of Austin Peay.
The Razorbacks are coming off a win against the 2007 NCAA tournament-qualifying Samford Bulldogs. Sophie Wentz's double overtime goal won the game - and the Adidas Gamecock Classic tournament - for the Razorbacks.
"That was a quality win; a very even game," UA coach Gordon Henderson said. "We probably created a few more good looks to goal than they did. And at the end of the day it was a very good goal in double overtime."
Wentz had the sole goal in the Samford game, but Kelly O'Connor took MVP honors for the tournament after scoring twice in the Jacksonville State game and assisting Wentz's goal against Samford. O'Connor was the second Razorback in history to receive Southeastern Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors for her efforts in the tournament.
Goalkeeper Britini Williams posted two more shutouts, giving her three on the season.
Austin Peay (1-5) enters the game off a 5-1 loss to the Evansville Purple Aces. The Lady Governers began the season with two straight losses, both a result of goals in the first half, causing the Governors to trail the rest of the game.
Against the Purple Aces, the Lady Governors found themselves trailing by five at the half, despite the efforts of goalkeeper Carley Newman, who managed to save six shots in the first half.
In the previous meeting between Arkansas and Austin Peay, the Razorbacks shutout the Lady Governors last September.
Ike cancels Texas trip
With the impending threat of Hurricane Ike, and news that its path had shifted to a more northerly course, Arkansas' Sunday match against Stephen F. Austin in Texas has been cancelled.
SFA officials are concerned that the new course of the storm will bring its effects closer to Nacogdoches, Texas, where the school's campus is located.
"The safety of our student-athletes and those on the opposing teams is always a primary concern," SFA Athletics Director Robert Hill said in a statement. "When you also consider that power outages and our potential responsibilities as a shelter site would put added strain on our event management staff, cancelling these events is simply the most prudent thing to do."
At this point, the match has not been rescheduled.
