The dean of the UA College of Education and Health Professions said his age is the reason he announced his retirement.
Dean Reed Greenwood has decided to step down after a 35-year career with the UA, which includes an eight-year tenure as the dean of one of the UA's fastest-growing colleges. His retirement will be effective June 30, 2009.
"One of the things academic deans go through is a five-year review, where the provost talks to faculty and different groups about the department... I went through one in 2006 and was recommended for re-appointment," Greenwood said. However, Greenwood asked to be given a "three-year appointment, which would end in 2009," when he will be 70 years old.
"I figured that would be the appropriate time to step down after I've served eight years as dean," Greenwood said.
"Greenwood has done a remarkable job in his eight years of leadership at the College of Education and Health Profession," said Chancellor G. David Gearhart in a press release. "His efforts in the 'Campaign for the Twenty-First Century' and on the 2010 Commission have helped his college grow and develop in ways that will benefit students and the people of Arkansas for decades to come."
The College of Education and Health Professions had a record enrollment of 3,177 students in the fall of 2007, which is the third largest enrollment on the UA campus, according to the press release.
"The first thing [I'm most proud of] is the number of students we are serving now as compared to what we were when I was appointed dean in 2001," Greenwood said. "In 2001, there was about 2,200 students, and last fall we recorded about 3,200 students. Now we serve more students in every program [in the college] and help prepare them for health and education professions."
The college's enrollment has increased by [almost 50 percent] "through Dean Greenwood's leadership," said Heidi Stambuck, director of communications for the college, "and the college's endowment has grown [over 30 million].
