Childs' forth quarter performance did not go unnoticed to his teammates and fellow receivers. Sophomore tight end D.J. Williams said that his performance was great.
"I thought he was phenomenal," Williams said. "He came out and had maybe a couple drops. Most freshmen would, in that situation, let that bother them the whole game, but he didn't. He stepped up, put it behind him and made big plays down the stretch. He had a huge touchdown for us and played really big."
Junior receiver Lucas Miller said that he was impressed with the poise Childs displayed in his first game.
"He came up big for us," Miller said. "He really matured quickly in that game. You love seeing a young guy like that take the coaching. He had a drop or whatever, but the thing about it was we tried to stay on him about moving onto the next play. And he came up big for us when we needed him."
With a game played in the new offense introduced by head coach Bobby Petrino, Childs said he will look to take the next step, but he will not get carried away with his performance.
"It boosted my confidence real good just seeing I had a chance to catch the ball and get in the end zone in my first game," Childs said. "But I don't get over confident, because I know this is the game of football and anything can happen just like that. I feel about the same [as I did last week], because every game I go to I try to be focused on what I need to do. I go over the plays in my head and how the defense is going to run."
Childs said the receiving core as a whole just needs to work hard and add to the rhythm the team had toward the end of Saturday's game in order to perform better.
"For all of the receivers together, we got to play hard," Childs said. "That's one thing we have to do. We need to make blocks, catch the ball and run great routes. We just need the quarterback's confidence up. If the quarterback is feeling good and we are catching every pass he throws, he will be feeling good and have a great day."
But right now Childs, who leads the SEC in receiving yards after one week, is looking forward to a homecoming of sorts by playing Louisiana-Monroe at Little Rock Saturday night.
"I'm looking forward to it, because the only time we played War Memorial Stadium was championship games and things like that," Childs said. "And I have more family coming down, so it will be great. It's always a great feeling playing there. Going there means it is close to home, so more people you know are at the game and cheering you on."
He said that he just hopes the game doesn't come down to one play like it did against Nashville in the conference championship.
But that's in the past.
