In an effort to create new student leaders campuswide, the Associated Student Government sponsors an ongoing program throughout the fall called Fresh H.O.G.S., or Freshman Helping Our Government Succeed, ASG representatives said.

"It's a really great program," said Emily Burrow, ASG secretary. "It's a great way to start networking and getting a foundation on campus."

According to the organization's mission statement, Fresh H.O.G.S. is "focused on educating first-year students on student government." Participants will "learn about the make-up of ASG and the roles each position plays in making our student government as effective as possible."

This year, Harry McCraney and Robin Terry will lead the program this year, said Megan Francis, ASG Chief of Staff.

"I work really closely throughout the year with both the Fresh H.O.G.S. and the coordinators," Burrow said, "and I just want the new participants to walk out of it with the same attitude that Harry McCraney did, saying that every single thing he learned in his Fresh H.O.G.S. program was put to good use during his RSO career."

"The goal of Fresh H.O.G.S. is to acquaint the participants with ASG," Francis said. "We want to see every Fresh H.O.G.S. participant in ASG in some way next fall."

Francis also noted that the ASG executives realize that not all participants will want to be involved in the ASG, so they are encouraged to find their own place to lead on campus, in either Residents' Interhall Congress or other on-campus groups and Registered Student Organizations.

This year, the Fresh H.O.G.S. program will consist of five hour and a half long sessions on Wednesdays starting Sept. 17.

Students will get to participate in a wide range of activities, Burrow said. These activities include a session on parliamentary procedure with Head of the Senate Jonathan Powell, planning a town hall meeting for the ASG with active ASG senators and Treasurer Ben Hale and learning about leadership and community involvement from guest speakers from the community.

Student participants will also be encouraged to participate in the Emerging Leaders Program during the spring semester. Freshmen not interested in Emerging leaders or Fresh H.O.G.S. are encouraged to apply for other positions within the ASG.

"I just really want to help anyone who wants to be involved find a place," Burrow said.

Applications for Fresh H.O.G.S. are due to the ASG office either on paper or online by Sept. 12 at noon. Sept. 12 is also the deadline for applications to become a part of the ASG committee, Judiciary Committee, and University Committee. Due today, Sept. 5 by noon are senate applications and applications for ASG Executive Cabinet.
