This fall season, the UA drama department will present classic plays by well-known playwrights as well as modern material that might be unfamiliar to students.
"There is something for everyone," said Mavourneen Dwyer, associate drama professor whose specialty is voice and speech.
The department will begin the 2008-2009 season with "Cymbeline" by William Shakespeare, according to the UA Drama Department Web site.
Cymbeline is a "tragicomedy with fairytale overtones," Dwyer said. It takes place before Christianity in ancient Britain and there is war, love and romance, she said.
The play's plot involves a "wicked stepmother, cross-dressing exile, abduction, disguise, a wager about fidelity, decapitation, caves in Wales and war becomes a triumph of imagination for actors and audiences alike," according to the drama department Web site.
Performances for "Cymbeline" will begin in October 10 in the University Theatre.
"Stop Kiss" by Diana Son" is a humorous and touching play that explores the relationship between two young women, laid-back New Yorker Callie and Sara, a confident newcomer from the Midwest, according to the Web site.
The play will trace the relationship between the two women and the consequences of an event that will change their lives, according to the Web site.
Graduate student Emily Jones will direct "Stop Kiss" and it will be performed October 30 in the Nadine Baum Studio.
The fall semester will conclude with Charles Dickens' holiday tale about the greedy and heartless Ebenezer Scrooge in "A Christmas Carol."
Assistant professor Michael Landman will direct the play and it will be performed in December 6 at the Walton Arts Center.
A play reading committeeput the schedule for the season together, Dwyer said.
"Each director puts in 10 choices, including musicals, tragedies, Shakespearean, and modern," she said. The directors then fill out forms explaining why they want to direct each play on their list and provide information involving the production of each play. The season selection is chosen from these forms, she said.
"The season has to go together," Dwyer said said.
