Changes for future parking on campus

Parking on campus has been a big concern for UA students in the last several years because of changes in availability and cost. The next few years may prove to be no different, with plans for a new parking deck, adjustments in scooter policy and another increase in permit costs.

Andy Gilbride, programming advisor for UA Parking, said the new parking deck, most likely dubbed the Garland Avenue Garage, will be located on existing lots 75 and 76, just east of the Quads and north of Futrall Hall.

The deck is being built to provide parking on that side of campus and to help accommodate for future parking needs, as the UA is expected to expand soon, Gilbride said.

He said last year UA Parking sold 1,500 permits for Harmon Parking Deck, which has 2,149 spaces. The garage is 75 percent full at its daily peak period. Harmon was overbuilt two levels, Gilbride said, also in an effort to keep ahead of parking needs on campus.

The new deck will have 1,500 spaces and will cost the same as Harmon, Gilbride said. The ground level will have retail space and will be the location of the new UA bookstore. It is expected to be finished August 2010.

The estimated cost for the deck is $25.4 million according to the Report on Current Parking Status posted online by Gary Smith, director of UA Parking.

Anyone driving scooters should be aware that even scooters under 50cc cannot be driven on sidewalks, according to Arkansas State law, and will no longer be tolerated on campus, Gilbride said.

Parking in bicycle stands is also no longer allowed and permits are required to park on campus. The permits are $6.10 for the school year, Gilbride said, and there will be designated parking areas for scooters.

Though the areas haven't been completed yet, their locations are already reflected on the parking map found on the UA Transit and Parking Web site, he said.

Parking permits went up another 5 percent this year and there is technically no longer any free parking on the UA campus now that meters have been put up along Arkansas Avenue.

It's nice that the university is adding more parking spaces but it's a shame that permits are so high. When I was at the university, a permit was $40 and the lot was next to the dorm. (Continued…)
