This might seem like a cheesy kick-back to the 1970s, but every Friday after classes are finally let out for the weekend, Razorbacks across town are left with the looming question, "What now?" Luckily, Fayetteville and the UA offer some great and inexpensive fun.
Fayetteville is home to many unique gatherings and festivals that occur all through the year. The biggest event is Bikes, Blues & BBQ. This festival occurs usually during the last week of September, and it is hard to miss as about 400,000 motorcycle enthusiasts roll into town and cruise around Fayetteville for the weekend. The event takes place on Dickson Street and also offers multiple showcases and music venues for bikers and non-bikers alike. This year, the Allman Brothers band will headline the festival, scheduled for the weekend of September the 26th, according to festival's official Web site.
Another great festival is the Dickson Street Music Festival, which takes place during the spring semester. It is an opportunity to bring fun new up-and-coming musical acts to Fayetteville. In late April, the festival featured bands like Sonic Youth and the Charlie Daniels Band. The tickets are a little more expensive at $50 for the weekend, but it's a lot more music and definitely something worth saving up for.
And for the real music fan, Fayetteville has legendary music venues that always have great acts coming through. George's Majestic Lounge on Dickson Street has a huge line up of great bands for the fall semester already, including Keller Williams, Jason Aldean, Blind Melon, Ani DiFranco, and more, according to George's Web site. Tickets range from no cost to $60.
For the non-music coinsure, there are also many fun places to go hang out around town. A favorite for many students is the lawn of Old Main on campus. Different groups of students are always hanging out on the lawn, jamming away on guitars or playing a good game of Frisbee golf. And everyone is usually more than happy to add another player to the game.
RZ's coffeehouse is another great hangout on campus. Students can use their flex dollars for a cheap cup of coffee or one of the other great drinks offered by the coffeehouse, and then hang out on the couches there or in the Arkansas Union. RZ'z also offers wireless Internet, so students can work on homework or surf the Web. A TV room is also available for students to catch their favorite shows or keep up with current events.
Common Grounds, located just down on Dickson Street, is another great coffeehouse.
Their prices are reasonable and it's a great location to eat breakfast. They also have an awesome art on display at all times so visitors can enjoy art from within the Fayetteville community.
For students looking for reasonably priced venues for fun activities, the campus is a perfect destination to begin the search.
