"It reminds me of the University of Arkansas," he said. "It's collegial, open and faculty-oriented."
With 25,000 students, UTA will offer a wonderful opportunity, he said.
"It's a big challenge, but a great challenge."
Bobbitt's experience in managing a diverse college has taught him to talk to people whose passions are different than his, he said.
The provost and vice president position does not have fixed terms, and UTA gave Bobbitt tenure in the department of chemistry. However, he won't teach until he knows if he will have time to dedicate to the students, he said.
Bobbitt has served as assistant professor, associate professor, vice chair of the department of chemistry and biochemistry, chair of the department of chemistry and biochemistry, associate dean for research and sciences, and interim dean. He was named dean of Fulbright College in 2003 and has continued to teach chemistry.
As dean, Bobbitt led the largest college at the UA, including 19 departments and almost 7,000 students, according to the press release.
He earned his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from Iowa State University and a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from the UA.
"The entire campus is really excited about having him on campus," Lewis said.
