UA increases sustainability efforts

Environmental sustainability initiatives will begin to be actively pursued on campus this April with the partnership of the UA Bookstore and Staples, the bookstore director said.
"One of the university priorities on campus is sustainability, and we are going to be a very big part of it this year," said Ali Sadeghi, director of the UA Bookstore.
The bookstore has already implemented many environmentally safe practices, like one-color gift wrapping and using a "dry ink," which has no byproducts that need to be thrown away after processing, he said.
The bookstore also provides some recycled items, and all bags are recyclable and made from recycled products, he said.
The bookstore is currently working with Staples to provide office supplies, and school supplies may be provided next year.
An informational product show and campaign will begin April 10, Sadeghi said.
Vendors will set up in the Union Connections Lounge to introduce environment-sustaining products that will be provided next year.
Groups that are active in recycling and sustainability are invited to the event, as well, including groups like Campus Greens, the Sierra Club, other student organizations and the City of Fayetteville, Sadeghi said.
"Saving the environment really takes the whole community," he said.
Some initiatives consist of offering paper products certified by the Forestry Stewardship Council - which come from "well-managed" tree farms - and working with Energy Star to provide energy-saving times that can be used with the Housing department, said Nicholas Mueller, new accounts coordinator for the UA Bookstore.
Mueller's motto for the campaign, he said, is "Red and white going green and clean."
Bookstore officials also plan to make individual students aware of what steps they can take to help protect the environment, through the campaign and by providing information in the bookstore, Sadeghi said.
A series of lectures regarding sustainability will be hosted once a month with speakers and book signings, and there will be a press release to announce these events, Sadeghi said. The speaker has yet to be determined for April.
