The music department is hosting a master class at 4:30 p.m. today and a concert tomorrow at 7:30 p.m. featuring prominent clarinetist Bil Jackson. Jackson will team with pianist Bill Douglas, weaving jazz, classical and contemporary formats into his sound. Both events will be held at the Stella Boyle Smith Concert Hall.

Jackson is currently a professor of clarinet at the University of Northern Colorado and is on the Artist-Faculty of the Aspen Music Festival. He has performed as a soloist with the Colorado, Honolulu, Denver, Charlotte, Dallas Chamber and Aspen Chamber orchestras, according to his biography.

He is the principal clarinetist with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra and the Aspen Chamber Symphony. He performs recitals and presents master classes throughout the U.S. and abroad. He most recently appeared at the Royal Conservatory in Toronto, according to his biography.

Jackson won the Academy's Concerto Competition three times and was awarded the gold medal for overall musicianship upon graduation from the Interlochen Arts Academy. He continued his formal study at Northwestern University with Robert Marcellus, according to his biography.

He also became the only player to ever win the International Clarinet Competition twice. In 1981, he was a finalist in the Prague International Clarinet Competition, according to his biography.

He is also the co-artistic director of the Alpenglow chamber music festival. He designs and manufactures reed-making equipment as a hobby, and is in the process of writing a book titled "SpeedReeding," according to his biography.

The second half of the master class will include clarinet reed-making and adjusting, said UA clarinet professor Nopachai Cholthitchanta, the host of the event.

The concert is open and free to the public, and students are encouraged to attend.
