"I'm living in my gravy boat filled with gravy," said Maria Bamford, warming up in her standup comedy show last Thursday in the Union Ballroom.
Thursday night's performance poked fun at boring college majors, offbeat therapy sessions and family members - particularly her mother.
Bamford has a peculiar penchant for frenetic female imitations. From angry animals to monsters and sneaky bill collectors, her voice impersonations kept the audience guessing. But the UA mascot stumped her.
"What is that? A pig carrying a blade?" Bamford asked playfully, inquiring about the Razorback image.
Fellow comedienne Jackie Kashian opened the show with her misadventures in driving an old car and what she calls the joys of Internet dating. She followed her act with a warm welcome for Bamford, whom she's known for more than 14 years.
In a pre-show interview, the pug-loving Bamford enthused about her four shows a month, working with Robin Williams, voice overs and getting a new dog to buddy with her pug, Blossom.
She referred to her vision board for projects and goals in 2008, which included aspirations for talks with Oprah Winfrey.
"It's like that whole 'if you visualize it, it will come,' that type of thing," she said.
Saturday, Bamford will perform at Punchline in San Francisco, Calif., according to her Web site, www.mariabamford.com. Her sitcom can be viewed at www.superdeluxe.com.
Kashian will be headlining her own show in New York, Feb. 20.
