Weems earns SEC award

Arkansas senior forward Sonny Weems has been named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Week after helping the Razorbacks knock off a pair of ranked teams last week.
Weems had 22 points and six rebounds in the 78-58 win over No. 25 Mississippi State on Wednesday, and a game-high 17 points along with four rebounds and five assists in Saturdayís 80-61 victory over No. 20 Florida.
The wins improved Arkansasí records to 16-5 overall and 5-2 in the SEC.
For the week, Weems averaged 19.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 3.0 assists. He shot 51.7 percent from the floor (15-29), including 57.1 percent on three-pointers (8-14).
In the win over the Bulldogs, Weems scored 10 points in 1:06 of the first half, which included a nine-second period where he subbed out of the game and came back in, meaning he scored 10 points in 57 seconds of playing time. In that run against the Bulldogs, he made three three-pointers and a free throw to complete a rare four-point play.
Against Florida, he scored seven points in 1:10, converting a dunk, hitting a three and a jumper to give the Razorbacks a 15-8 lead.
For the year, the pre-season second-team All-SEC pick is averaging 14.5 points, 4.6 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.5 steals. In SEC play, he is averaging 19.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 3.1 assists.
Weems is the first Razorback to earn SEC player of the week honors this season. Guard Gary Ervin earned the award two times in 2007 while guard Patrick Beverley was a three-time freshman of the week.
