Razorbacks Alain Bailey and Spencer McCorkel earned weekly track and field awards given out by the Southeastern Conference, it was announced on Tuesday.
Bailey, a sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica, earned SEC Field Athlete of the Week honors after winning the long jump at the Razorback Invitational last weekend.
Back from a season-ending knee surgery in 2007, he continued his 2008 indoor season with an NCAA provisional-qualifying jump of 25-7.25 to win the long jump. Bailey set a personal best with the mark. His jump leads the SEC by more than seven inches and sits at No. 3 on the national list. Bailey is now NCAA provisionally-qualified in two events (long jump, 25-7.25; high jump 7-0.25).
McCorkel, a freshman from Bryant, Ark., was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after winning the pole vault. Being honored in as many weeks as he has competed, McCorkel cleared the cross bar set at 17-2.75 to win the pole vault in his second collegiate meet. His clearance is tied for No. 8 on the national list, tied for No. 1 on the SEC list and improves his NCAA provisional-qualifying mark. McCorkel moves from No. 7 all-time at UA (17-0.75) to tie for No. 5 on the UA top 10 list.
